In the mean time, have a safe and happy holiday!

Holiday Closings

Stories with Mrs. Claus

'Twas two weeks before Christmas, to the library came
Two special visitors, Claus was the name.

Mrs. Claus read us stories, oh what a treat!

The children made ornaments that were so very sweet.

All good boys and girls, or so they all said,
Got to munch on some cookies, some green and some red.

Santa had toys, a whole bag to give out.
The children were happy and gave quite a shout!

Each good little child told Santa their wish
For the gifts they hoped to unwrap on Christmas.

Then after the hugs, and waving goodbye,

The Clauses were off, in the blink of an eye.

Santa gave a big laugh, his whole belly shook,

"Merry Christmas," he said, "and to all a good book!"

NLPL Is Tree-riffic!

On December 6, the library took part in New Lenox's annual tree-lighting festival on the commons.

(Our decorating team, Ms. Jen (with her son, Noah) and Ms. Erin from the YS department, and Alex, our tech wizard, with his wife, Kristen)

Lots of groups in town "adopted" trees to decorate for the holidays. The rules were simple: decorations had to be environmentally friendly and look cool!

(Our finished tree)

The YS staff made some great ornaments that will serve both as festive decor and treats for the birds and squirrels who make their homes on the commons.

We used bagels, rice cakes and bread cookies, iced in peanut butter or marshmallow fluff as the bases for some of our ornaments. Then they got a sprinkling of sugars, fruit snacks, seeds and more to make them colorful and delicious! We also made pipe-cleaner shapes strung with Froot Loops, Milk-Bone ornaments and more. Come and check out our tree, as well as all the other festive firs, on the commons.

(All lit up at night)

Friday Fun: Meet the YS Staff

Wonder who it is that's helping with your reference question? Want to know more about the person leading your program? For the next few weeks, the New Lenox Kids! blog will be helping you get to know your YS staff.

This week, you get to meet Cathy, one of the Youth Services Reference Assistants.

Name: Cathy Hartney

How long have you been at New Lenox Public Library? I started just before the new Library opened in 2001.

What's your favorite thing about working in a library? I like to see the young children enjoying the pre-school area by the tree. They like the puzzles, blocks, computers, and the books, too!

Do you run any programs? Happy Books, Happy Cooks for children 3 and over. We meet on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.

What is your favorite book? The gothic romance “Jane Eyre”. I’ve read it 3 or 4 times.

If you could be any character from any book, who would you want to be? Cinderella…after she marries the prince, of course.

Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what are their names? I have two granddogs….my son’s poodles. They are a lot of fun.

Do you have any kids? Two grown sons and a daughter-in-law.

What is one random fact about you? When I am not working at the Library, I work at a school, in a class with 6 physically disabled children.

What is your favorite food? I’d probably have to say sausage pizza….or maybe dessert…or maybe glazed donuts…or….

If you didn't work in a library, what would you want to do? What could be better than this ... getting paid while watching the cutest kids come through the Library.

Have questions for Cathy or any of the other YS staff members? Feel free to ask, or just stop by the reference desks to say "hi!"

Thursday Treasure: Family Reading

Tonight the library is promoting family reading with a pajama party for the whole family! The program runs from 6:30-7:30 p.m., and pre-registration is required (spots are still open).

Even if you don't make it out for the program, spend a little time doing some family reading. Classic children's picture books like Where the Wild Things Are, Curious George or any of the Dr. Seuss books are charming, fun reads for the whole family to share. Plus, kids who are read to when they are younger are more likely to read for fun as they get older, too.

Good Reads Tuesday - The Great and Only Barnum

The Great and Only Barnum: The Tremendous, Stupendous Life of Showman P.T. Barnum by Candace Fleming

New Lenox Library Call Number J B BAR

This week's selection is another of our nominees for Best Book of 2009, and one of only two non-fiction (true stories) that made the list. Some folks have the idea that non-fiction is dry and boring, and only check out biographies when they have book reports to do. To them I say this: The Great and Only Barnum proves that sometimes the truth is way more interesting than anything made up.

Most people know P.T. Barnum as the circus guy, half of the Barnum & Bailey of "Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus" fame. But the showman didn't even get into the circus world until the latter part of his life. As a young man, he started the American Museum in New York City and became known for the strange oddities he showcased there. His life wasn't all elephants and mermaids, though, and the author talks about Barnum's misfortunes, too.

This is a great read, with lots of pictures, and is perfect for anyone looking for a fascinating story.

Good Reads Tuesday - Scat

Scat by Carl Hiaasen

New Lenox Library Call Number J HIA

When Nick and Marta's strange science teacher goes missing after a class field trip, the two think there is more to the story than the headmaster would have them believe. When the story starts to unfold, Nick has to learn to trust his instincts and that things aren't always as they appear.

Part mystery, part environmental story, Scat has a lot of twists and turns. Targeted at older readers, this book will probably appeal to fans of Hiaasen's other stories. It's a good read, and one of our nominees for Best Book of 2009.

Have you read it yet? What did you think?

Do you have any kids? No.

Good Reads Tuesday - 43 Old Cemetery Road

43 Old Cemetery Road, Book 1: Dying to Meet You by Kate Klise and M. Sarah Klise
New Lenox Library Call Number: J KLI

Meet Seymour. Seymour's got some strange parents - they are paranormal investigators trekking through Europe...without Seymour. He stayed behind in the old mansion his parents are renting out. If Seymour's parents are strange, his friends are even stranger - a cat, a ghost named Olive and a frustrated scary-story writer.

This book, the first in a series, is told in a series of letters - from Seymour to Olive, from Olive to Ignatius (the grumpy writer), from Ignatius to his lawyer- a whole cast is introduced in a quick to read story.

It's not really a ghost story, even though there are ghosts in it. It's more of a funny read about how friends can come in all shapes and sizes. I, for one, can't wait to read book two!

Bring your mom, your dad or even your little sister and see if you can hit it big with B-I-N-G-O!

Good Reads Tuesday - Scary Stories

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and Scary Stories 3 by Alvin Schwartz
New Lenox Library Call Number: J 398.25 SCH

If you are like me, once mid-October rolls around, you want to get a little scared. These books will certainly do the trick. I've been a big fan of the Scary Stories collection since I was in grade school. With the creepy illustrations, the books bring thrills and chills galore.

Many of the stories are re-tellings of some ghost stories you may be familiar with, and some are even a bit silly, but most are chilling. I wouldn't recommend them to the faint of heart, and if you do read them, you might want to leave the lights on!

Thursday Treasure: Playaway Digital

Like listening to audio books but hate having to lug a CD player with you? Do you love your iPod or MP3 player?

New Lenox Library has some really cool audio products called Playaways. They are small, like an MP3 player, and have audio books recorded on them. You can control the speed, volume, and it remembers where you left off on your story, all in one little device. All you need to do is pop a battery in the back and plug in your headphones!

These are great for reluctant readers, or for kids who like to listen to books while doing other stuff.

Come in and see our selection of titles. We've got The 39 Clues series, plus Allie Finkle stories, and classics like Sarah, Plain and Tall.

Check one out today!

Good Reads Tuesday - All The Lovely Bad Ones

All the Lovely Bad Ones by Mary Downing Hahn
New Lenox Library Call Number: J HAH (2010 Caudill Nominee)

If you like a good ghost story, All the Lovely Bad Ones is a great pick. I had read lots of Mary Downing Hahn's haunting tales before (Wait 'Til Helen Comes is another great one!) but something about this book just pulls you in immediately.
This is the story of Travis and Corey, a brother and sister sent to spend the summer at their grandmother's bed and breakfast. When the two hear that the inn is supposed to be haunted, they see the perfect opportunity to play some pranks and maybe drum up some business for their grandmother. But the innocent practical jokes wake up a not-so-nice spirit, and Travis and Corey have to figure out how to set right some past wrong-doings.

It's a very suspenseful read, with lots of twists and turns, great for anyone looking to get a little spooked.

Homework Help Mondays

Have you ever had a project to work on, but had a hard time finding information? Needed to use an encyclopedia, but the library was closed?

You should check out Grolier Online through the NLPL Web site. Grolier offers a wide array of useful information, and better yet, it's all been pre-checked to make sure facts are correct and the sources are reliable. It includes databases like America The Beautiful for state facts, The New Book Of Knowledge for current events and access to the flagship Grolier Encyclopedia.

New Lenox Library cardholders can access Grolier Online at home, just by using their library card number. Just look for the link under the Homework Help tab on the NLPL Web site.

Or, you can access the site from any of the public computers here at the library.

Happy researching!

Friday Fun: Meet the YS Staff

Wonder who it is that's helping with your reference question? Want to know more about the person leading your program? For the next few weeks, the New Lenox Kids! blog will be helping you get to know your YS staff.

This week, you get to meet Alissa, one of the Youth Service Reference Assistants.

Name: Alissa

How long have you been at New Lenox Public Library? Almost a year and half.

What's your favorite thing about working in a library? Lots of things! I've always loved books, so I like being surrounded by them, but I also think my job is fun because I get to plan programs and be creative and silly.
Do you run any programs? I run WordPlay, which is our writing club, and I run Tales & Tunes, Simply Silly (sometimes) and Book Adventures, and some of the Saturday programs.

What is your favorite book? I can't pick! Lately, I've been loving The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, the 39 Clues books, Harry Potter always! I also like the scary stories that Mary Downing Hahn writes. For picture books, you can't beat Mo Willems! I love the Pigeon! I also love the Fancy Nancy books, because I feel fancy sometimes, too.

If you could be any character from any book, who would you want to be? Hmm, this is a tough one. Maybe Hermione from Harry Potter, or Bella Swan from Twilight.

Do you have any pets? I have a Border Collie/Jack Russell Terrier mix dog named Lola. She's got lots of energy and loves to give kisses!

Do you have any kids? Nope.

What is one random fact about you? I used to be a newspaper reporter.

What is your favorite food? I love sweets! I also really like pizza:)

If you didn't work in a library, what would you want to do? I would want to be a writer, a party planner or an actress...working in a library is sort of like getting to do all three!

Have questions for Alissa or any of the other YS staff members? Feel free to ask, or just stop by the reference desks to say "hi!"

Wednesday Spotlight: Simply Silly Storytime

Simply Silly Storytime is our Wednesday morning storytime for kids of all ages. With music, stories, activities and playtime, Simply Silly is our biggest weekly program!
The storytime is hosted each week by either Miss Jen, Miss Erin or Miss Alissa, and every week there is a different theme - like zany animals, big red apples and friendship fun.
Kids (and caregivers) will learn rhymes and fingerplays, and get a chance to get all their wiggles out.
Simply Silly starts promptly at 10:30 each Wednesday during our regular programming sessions, and it lasts for 45 minutes. There's no pre-registration for Simply Silly - caregivers just sign up on the Meeting Room door the day of the program. Space is limited to the first 36 kids.
Because Simply Silly, like our other toddler and baby programs, is an interactive program, we depend on moms, dads, grandparents and babysitters to join in our rhymes and songs each week. It's a great place to meet other parents and caregivers with similarly aged children, and there is plenty of social time, but during the stories and songs, it's important that grown-ups set a good example for kids and practice quiet listening.

Check it out this week!

Good Reads Tuesday - When You Reach Me

When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
New Lenox Library Call Number: J STE

When You Reach Me is a really unique story. There are lots of plot twists and turns, so it's sort of a mystery, but there are elements of science fiction and realistic fiction, too.
Miranda is a sixth grader living in New York in the 1970s. She's a lot like most kids. She has a favorite book (A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle). She's having trouble adjusting to middle school and the new rules about friendship that she finds there. She's dealing with issues with her mother, who raised Miranda all alone.
But unlike most kids, Miranda starts getting mysterious notes from someone who seems to know what's going to happen before it does. As the story unfolds, Miranda and the mystery note-writer have to try to save the life of a friend of Miranda's.
The last few chapters of the book explain the mystery, and after I read this book the first time, I wanted to go back and read it again to pick up all the clues I missed before. This is a great read!

Homework Help Mondays - Help Now!

Need some homework help? Stuck on a math problem or need another set of eyes to look over an essay?

We have a solution! It's called Help Now, and it's a live tutoring service that New Lenox Library cardholders can access from home or here in the library. Students in grades 3 through 12 can go to the site, and receive personal attention from a tutor - whether it's help with a specific homework problem or just practicing skills. Plus, there's test prep!

Youth Services staffer Liz has been using Help Now to help her daughters with their homework. They have tried Help Now several times, mostly with math homework. Liz said she loves the way that a live tutor is there to assist each kid with their individual needs.

The tutors actually work with students to find solutions, showing them the steps to take to solve math problems. If students want more problems to practice a particular skill set, the tutors will create some.

To try Help Now, just click here, or go to the New Lenox Library's Web site and click the Brain Fuse icon. You'll be asked to download some free software, then you'll be good to go.

Want to try it out at the library or need help accessing it? Just ask at the Youth Services Reference Desk and a staff member would be glad to show you!

The library is also hosting a demonstration on October 15. Parents and teachers are invited to attend a 5 p.m. session and students are asked to stop by at 6 p.m.

Help Now, powered by Brain Fuse, is a great homework help tool for kids who are struggling, for the occasional stumper or for parents who are looking for a little extra direction for their kids. Best of all, it's ABSOLUTELY FREE for New Lenox cardholders.

Have you tried it out? What did you think?

Banned Books Week!

This week, if you come into the library, you'll see an unusual sight - an army of brown-wrapped books, standing at attention on top of the Juvenile Reference collection.

While books do make great gifts, that's not why they are all wrapped up. The display has a different purpose. This week, libraries and book stores across the country are celebrating Banned Books Week. Banned books are books that have been pulled from the shelves of libraries and schools because people think some of the content is inappropriate. Hundreds of books are challenged, or questioned, every year.

You might be thinking, "If banning books is bad, why should we celebrate it?"

We celebrate the fact that, even though so many books are questioned or challenged, many of them remain on library shelves and classroom reading lists. We celebrate because we live in a country where, thanks to the First Amendment, every citizen has the right to access information. And we celebrate because, despite attempts at censorship, great books are still being written and read by people of all ages.

Some of the books on display this week are the Harry Potter series, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the Captain Underpants series, and Olive's Ocean, but there are many, many more books that have been challenged or even banned in past years.

More information is available online at http://www.ala.org/ or http://www.bannedbooksweek.org/.

What's your favorite "banned" book?

Friday Fun: Meet the YS Staff

Wonder who it is that's helping with your reference question? Want to know more about the person leading your program? For the next few weeks, the New Lenox Kids! blog will be helping you get to know your YS staff.

This week, you get to meet Dana, the Youth Services Department Head.

Name: Dana

How long have you been at New Lenox Public Library? Two years the beginning of October

What's your favorite thing about working in a library? There’s always a variety of things to do and things going on so it’s never boring.

Do you run any programs? Not any regular programs, except for the annual Hamster Race. I also have done some Saturday programs and tours or programs for visiting groups.

What is your favorite book? I have very many favorite books, but one of my favorite chapter books is The Underneath by Kathi Appelt. Toys Go Out by Emily Jenkins is a very funny easier chapter book. I love anything by Mo Willems. And I’m a big fan of the Scaredy Squirrel books by Melanie Watt.

If you could be any character from any book, who would you want to be? Maybe one of the characters from the Harry Potter books, mostly because the world Rowling created was fascinating. When I was reading those books, I wanted to see characters moving around in paintings and be able to eat chocolate covered frogs and see a game called Quidditch.

Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what are their names? Yes, I have two cats: Lilah and Sami, both female.

Do you have any kids? No

What is one random fact about you? I lived in Japan for nearly seven years.

What is your favorite food? My favorite type of food is Mexican. And I’m a big fan of popcorn!

If you didn't work in a library, what would you want to do? Something that would allow me to travel anywhere I wanted to go.

Have questions for Dana or any of the other YS staff members? Feel free to ask, or just stop by the reference desks to say "hi!"

What are some of your favorite movies?

Wednesday Spotlight: Tales & Tunes

Tales & Tunes is our Thursday morning toddler program. Offered to kids ages 2 to 3 1/2 years, the half-hour program has kids singing, dancing and doing fun fingerplays.

Miss Alissa is the instructor, and she loves picking silly, simple stories to read to the kids, and funny songs to get them up and moving. Each week, the kids (with the help of parents) make a cute craft to take home, too.

Handouts with additional rhymes and songs, as well as an early literacy tip of the week, go home with parents or caregivers each week.

There's no registration - caregivers just sign up on the Storytime Room door the day of the program. Miss Alissa has two sessions, one at 10:30 and another at 11:15. Space is limited to the first 15 kids in each session. Older (or younger) siblings are welcome to sit in, but they need to be signed in, too. Crafts will be given out to the 2 to 3 1/2 year olds first, though.

Good Reads Tuesday - Evolution of Calpurnia Tate

The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly
New Lenox Library Call Number: J KEL

Callie Vee has a hard enough time being the only girl in a family of seven kids. But when she turns 11, her mother decides that it's time that Callie learns how to be a proper lady - and that means giving up her dreams of being a scientist. In 1899, it was hard for women to get into fields like biology, but with the help of her grandfather and an important discovery on her family's property, maybe Callie can convince her mother that needlepoint and cooking aren't the only skills a girl can use.

I really liked this book because I thought Callie was an awesome character, and the relationships that she had with her mom, brothers and grandfather seemed really genuine. Plus, I love stories that have a strong female as the protagonist. I also liked the historical aspect of the book, and the time that Callie "grew" up in is very different from the one we live in now - girls today are lucky to be able to study whatever interests them in school!

Did you read this book? What did you think?

Homework Help Mondays - Textbooks @ NL Library

Have you ever gotten all the way home from school, then realized you left your vocabulary book in your desk? Or needed to read ahead in your Language Arts book, but forgot it?

You're in luck! Just behind the main youth services desk, we have almost every school textbook for the New Lenox elementary and middle schools. You can stop by, make copies, and still get your homework turned in on time!

Only a couple of rules: You can't check them out to take home with you, so you have to make copies or do your homework at the library. And, even though you can use the textbooks anywhere in the library, you have to bring them back to the youth services desk. Pretty easy, right?

You can always call ahead to make sure we have the textbook you need: 815.485.2605
