The Aviary by Kathleen O’Dell J ODE—If you love The Secret Garden then you will instantly fall in love with The Aviary. Eleven-year-old Clara is a lonely girl who is shut off from the outside world and never given a chance to leave the decrepit mansion she lives in because of a heart condition. Her mother takes care of the very frail woman who owns the mansion, named Mrs. Glendoveer, who has lost her entire family. The only outdoor space that Clara is allowed to enter is the mansion’s rose garden, but she doesn’t like going there because it is also home to an aviary with loud, squawking exotic birds. At first the birds terrify Clara until something happens that leads her into trying to unravel a mystery, making a wonderful friend and freedom.
